Memory Strategies
Memory Learning
Learning is the acquisition of skill or knowledge, while memory is the expression of what you've acquired. Another
difference is the speed with which the two things happen. If you acquire the
new skill or knowledge slowly and laboriously, that's learning. If acquisition occurs instantly, that's making a memory.
The Learning
Pyramid demonstrates that the best method for learning retention are at the Base
of the Pyramid.
Human Memory
Human Memory
is processes that are used to acquire, store, retain and later retieve
information. It invoves three domains: encoding, storage and retrieval.
Encoding - is the process of getting information
into memory. If the information and stimuli never gets encoded, it will never
be remembered. Encoding requires linking new information to existing knowledge
in order to make the new information more meaningful
Storage - consists of retention of information over time. It is
believed that we can accumulate information in three main storage areas that
vary according to time frames: sensory, short-term and long-term
Retrieval - is the process of getting information out of
memory. The ability to access and retrieve information from memory allows
us to actually use these memories to make decisions, interact with others, and
solve problems.
3 Function for Storage
Because
there is no need for us to remember everything we experience, the different
stages of human memory function as a sort of filter.
- Sensory - Holds information coming in through the senses for a period ranging from a fraction of a second to several seconds.
- Short-Term(working) - Holds about seven to nine items for no more then 20 or 30 seconds at a time without rehearsal.
- Long Term - Holds information for a long period time with a time virtually unlimited capacity.
Memory Strategies
- Acrostic - very similar to acronym
- Visualization - creates image of something in mind
- Learn by Mistake - lead to remembering true answer
- Repetation - learn something new with repeat it a lot of times
- Hand Copy - hand write notes and assignment
- Sleep on It - sleep after you learn
Improving Concentration
- Enviroment - Study in comfortable enviroment
- Nutrion - Eat at a right time and drink a lot of water
- Focus on one task at a time - Avoid any distraction
- Take short breaks - Avoid continously study and do revision
- Get enough sleep - To ensure you are not sleepy in class
